Ligue 1 heavy hitters OGC Nice are reportedly interested in loaning Tottenham Hotspur prospect Bryan Gil this month.

According to L’Equipe, top-flight OGC Nice are looking to secure Tottenham Hotspur starlet Bryan Gil on loan during the current transfer window in January.

The Ligue 1 club currently sit second in the French top flight and are having a good season. They are currently 11 points behind Paris Saint-Germain at the top with 19 games to go, a chasm that is difficult to bridge given the quality at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal.

With the chasing pack led by Marseille close at hand, Nice should be more keen to hold on to second place. This will allow them to participate in the UEFA Champions League next season. Nice have not featured in continental competition since 1959/60, and winning qualification will be a feat in itself.

Christophe Galtier’s team can make do with a few reinforcements in the current winter transfer window to help their cause. One of the names on their list is Tottenham sensation Bryan Gil. The Spaniard moved to North London last summer from Sevilla. He has shown some quality moments for Spurs but is yet to establish himself as a first-team regular. The 20-year-old has made 19 appearances, providing one assist during that span.

Gil is a versatile player with good vision to start, a left winger who can also do work on the other flank or through the middle. However, he is behind Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura in Tottenham’s attacking setup. Steven Bergwijn has also returned to his game, and following his heroism against Leicester City, he could be ready to play a bigger role in the games to come.

With Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele also in the mix, for now Gil has plenty of competition on his hands. The same cannot be said for Nice, where he could find easier opportunities. The Ligue 1 team should welcome Mario Lemina again but without Youcel Atal, still in the African Cup of Nations. A burst of fresh blood in the transfer window will certainly help their cause and bring renewed energy for a solid finish.

Gil harbors hopes of making Spain’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup but is unlikely to make it if he continues to warm up Tottenham’s bench. Moving to Nice, especially if it can guarantee him regular playing time, is a no-brainer for the Spanish prospect.

But a potential departure will leave Tottenham running out of options from the start. Antonio Conte’s side lack strength up front, a weakness that could bite them given the hectic schedule they could be in in the coming months. Tottenham have seen several games postponed in December and January due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now have to fit them into their schedule in the coming months.

Conte will have to rotate his team, and having Gil out of the equation could leave him out of options. Spurs are closing in on Adama Traore, and although the Spaniard could play on the wing, Conte intends to deploy him as a right-back.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that the Wolves star’s arrival won’t do much to offset Gil’s potential departure, at least not directly. Gil and Tottenham both have a decision to make in the coming days and what remains to be seen.
